The IRCCS Foundation National Cancer Institute or Milan Cancer Institute (founded in 1928 as the Vittorio Emanuele III Institute for the study and treatment of cancer), is a public hospital in Milan dedicated to the treatment of cancer from a clinical and research point of view. The institute was inaugurated on 12 April 1928 by Vittorio Emanuele III, in 1939 it received the recognition of Scientific Institute for Hospitalisation and Treatment (IRCCS)and, today, represents the largest oncology centre in Lombardy, as well as the headquarters of the coordination office of the Lombardy Oncology Network (R.O.L.)
The Institute conducts translational research that follows two paths: “From bench to bedside” and back, combining data from clinical practice with evidence found in the laboratory. From the systematic evaluation of the effects of treatments outside of clinical trials—”real-world evidence”—we derive signals to be transferred to the clinic and the laboratory.
The Institute has programs and projects in every area and phase of research, from preclinical to clinical, epidemiological, and health care. Studies are implemented through multidisciplinary teams, allowing for both directions.
