ABOUT THE ONCOLOGICALE INSTITUTE “PROF. DR. ION CHIRICUTĂ”
Institute of the Oncology “Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuţă” Cluj-Napoca (IOCN) is one of the most important medical institutes in Romania, with tens of thousands of patients coming annually to benefit from preventive, curative and palliative medical services in the oncology field. IOCN is a health unit of national public interest with legal personality, subordinated to the Ministry of Health, and operates on the basis of
Decision of the Government of Romania no. 144/2010 on the organization and functioning of the Ministry of Health.
The “modern” era of the Institute is inextricably linked to the name Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuţă, who takes over his leadership in 1958. Formed at the prestigious surgical school at the Brâncovenesc Hospital in Bucharest, disciple of Prof. Iacob Iacobovich, Prof. Chiricuţă started the construction of the new Institute located in str. Republic of 34-36, construction completed in 1965. The professor is due to the current conceptual structure of the institute based on three very original ideas in Romania at that time:
COOPERATION
Treatment of the oncological patient is a complex treatment, being necessary the cooperation of the surgeon, radiotherapist, medical oncologist, pathologist and other specialists
THEIR RECIPTION
Research activity in cancerology is indispensable, for its findings to be applicable to patients as soon as possible (which today is called “translational research”)
CONTINUING LEARNING
The training of oncologist specialists is possible only in such institutions with complex structure that provide the material basis, as well as the necessary competences
