The Institut Català d’Oncologia -Catalan Institute of Oncology- (ICO) is a public monographic Comprehensive Cancer Centre created in 1995 by the Catalan Department of Health, which provides oncology services to a reference population of 3.5M, 50% of the Region. The scope of the ICO includes prevention (including early detection of breast, colon and cervical cancer), diagnosis and treatment of different types of cancer in adults. It provides all kinds of oncological therapies, systemic treatments, BMT in all its typologies, CAR-T, and various radiotherapy modalities, including brachytherapy and intraoperative radiotherapy. It consists of 4 centres, three covering all oncological and haematological diseases and one only for the haematological, distributed throughout Catalonia.

ICO’s structure includes the Girona Cancer Epidemiology and Registry Unit (UERCG) and the ICO-ICS Multicentre Hospital Tumour Registry. Both units have a solid track record with over 30 years’ experience in cancer epidemiology research and cancer registration

  • The Epidemiology and Cancer Registry Unit of Girona (UERCG) conducts the epidemiological study of cancer in the Girona district and produces the statistics necessary to determine the incidence, mortality, prevalence and survival of cancer in our population, while also monitoring its evolution. This information is systematically compiled in accordance with quality controls and international standard regulations that allow the inclusion of the Registry data in different journals, where the data can be consulted and compared with other national and international registries. Specifically, the Girona Cancer Registry is a population-based registry that has gathered information on cancer in the Girona district since 1994 and on breast cancer and female genital cancer in women, children and adolescent population since 1980.
  • The ICO-ICS Multicentre Hospital Tumour Registry (RTH ICO-ICS) is a valuable tool that provides data on the incidence, characteristics of tumours, quality and fairness of diagnostic and therapeutic processes, as well as the survival of cancer patients seen in three geographic areas (Badalona, Girona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat). It systematically and exhaustively compiles a set of clinical and demographic information on all cancer patients treated in six health centres which cover approximately two million inhabitants of Catalonia. Set up in 2018, the RTH ICO-ICS is one of the most extensive hospital cancer registries in Spain, with an annual average of around 15,000 registered tumours.
